To behold the vision -
The more the seer beholds,
The more she is beheld;
The more she seeks to know,
The more she is known.
This is not simply a vision of God:
It is many visions.

Twenty of us enjoyed seeing the play at the
Detroit Repertory Theater with $100.00 raised
for First UU. I have 20 tickets for the next
production "Sorrows and Rejoicing", a South
African play. The tickets are for April 26 at
3:00 P.M. Also, pizza kits along with breads,

Social Justice
With impending war in Iraq arousing new
urgency, the Social Justice Committee met
Sunday, February 2. In order to keep one
another informed about ways to be involved, we
decided to form a list of those interested in being
notified by e-mail (I st choice) or phone (if e-
mail is not available). This is intended to keep
busy people informed and involved with a
minimum of time spent going to meetings. If you
want to be on the list, please send your e-mail
address to
Cindy Hill or Jan Thompson . If you can't receive e-
mail, call with your phone number. Our number
is 313-534-4794.
The Women's Alliance
February meeting date is the last Wednesday
of February, the 26th Please make reservations
for the luncheon by phoning Eiko Takernoto at
313-869-6389, or the church office at 313-833-

theater party has been cancelled. Our program,
instead, will be a speaker who has knowledge
of the situation in Iraq. Mr. Peter Staples, a
member of Northwest UU Church.
SOCIAL JUSTICE--HEARTLAND
DISTRICT
At the January meeting of the Heartland District,
Mary Lou Malone was appointed Chair of the
District Social Justice Committee. She reported
that Duncan Tanner, UUSC Senior Director for
Institutional Advancement, presented a model
for issue-oriented Social Justice action at the
regional level. The congregations will be
surveyed about interest in this model and the
issue to focus on. The network will meet again
at the end of February. There will be a chance
for all of us to have input at the regional level.

William Grant Still Concert
February 23, 2003
3:00-5:00
WDET Reporter and Michigan Opera singer,
Celeste Headlee will perform her grandfather,
William Grant Still's music at the First Unitarian
Universalist Church, 4605 Cass Ave. (at Forest).
Called the "dean of African-American
composers", Still was the first African American
to write a major symphonic work performed by a
major American orchestra, the first to conduct a
major orchestra in the US, the first to have an
opera produced by a major American company
and the first to have an opera televised over a
national network in the US. Leopold Stokowski
said that Still is one of America's greatest
composers. The program will include art, songs,
arias, and popular songs performed
chronologically with Celeste telling the story of
her grandfather's life. This will be an intimate look
at one of our nation's most important musical and
racial figures, combined with some of the
composer's beautiful melodies. Celeste is an
accomplished soloist in her own right and has
been traveling, performing, lecturing, and editing
books on her grandfather, William Grant Still, for
the past 10 years. Accompanying Celeste will be
Rob Conway, pianist for the DSO and chair of
the Piano Department at Wayne State University.
Master of Ceremonies for the program will be
WDET's "Legend of Jazz", Ed Love. The public
is invited and a $10.00 donation will be accepted
at the door.

Thank You
Many thanks to our church members who
did the extraordinary work to make the
sixteenth annual Kwanzaa Jazz Concert
possible. Through this Herculean effort on
the part of the whole church membership,
the Black Concerns Working Group was
able to give $2755.00 to the church.
Each year we endeavor to raise more money
than in the past. We welcome any ideas and
elbow grease you can contribute to help us.
Be a part, it's our church. Let's leap over
the financial barriers that stymie our growth.
With your help, we can do it.
Thank you,
Mildred Robinson, Chair, Black Concerns
Working Group of First Unitarian
Universalist Church
It's Time!
Do you know how long it's been since we last
published a First UU cookbook? That is the
question I asked after pigging out at out last
wonderful potluck! It has been almost 20 years
and I think it's time to update this wonderful
tradition. Irene Schultz and I are looking for
interested food sleuths to ferret out some new
recipes. If you are interested in helping to
compile the cookbook, join us during coffee hour
on February 16th Allison Parks

Thanks to the wonders of cyberspace, most
of the graphics that were supposed to be in
the last Newsletter showed up as giant x's.
Just picture, if you will, an appropriate
picture for the places where the x's were.
