Committees and Affiliates

Search Committee

Recently the Settled Minister Search Committee put the final touches on First Church’s Congregational Record. Ministers looking to be settled are now able to view our Congregational Record online.

The Committee will be meeting with the Heartland Interim District Representative, Rev. Lisa Presley, in the next month or so to go over the next steps in the process. We should start getting some applicants around that time too.

Our next big job is to assemble the informational packet to exchange with potential candidates.

Thanks to all of you for your support of our work to select First Church’s next minister.

The Ministerial Search Committee,

Dr. James A. Robinson, Chair
Dr. Ivan Cotman
Sharlene Gage
Marilyn Mitchell
Kathe Stevens

Constitution/By-Laws Committee

We've been busy working over the summer to improve First UU's Constitution and By-Laws based on comments and suggestions made at the May Congregational Meeting and at other times. We had an informational meeting after church on Oct 29 and will have another on Nov 12 at 1:30 PM to review the revisions and give everyone a chance to make further modifications.

Sally Borden, Earl Harvey and Mary Lou Malone.

Continuing Dialog

Join with UU's and the Message dialog club for an interfaith dialog on November 12 at 2 PM. Thank you to all of the people from our church who attended the Iftar at Wayne State. First UU was well represented. Thank
you to the dialog club for inviting us. We were able to deepen our understanding of the joys of Ramadan. Interfaith understanding is often in short supply these days. - Margaret Wilkie

Noel Night

First UU is again participating in Noel Nite on Dec 2. It is one of our best opportunities to open our doors to the community at large. Volunteers are requested to perform the following duties: Chaperoning performers, sound system, greeters, tour guides, cookie/cider monitors, luminary candle maintenance. Your donations for cookies cookies cookies will be most welcome. We will be gathering on Friday, Dec 1 for a pizza dinner followed a decorating/preparation party. The Unity Fellowship will be having a celebration in Memorial Hall the same night so decorating may continue on Saturday, Dec 2.

We will also welcome any musicians/storytellers to perform in Memorial Hall during the night. Contact Dan Wiest to volunteer/participate.

Noel Nite Holiday Bazaar

If you are interested in selling things, please email Irene Schultz as soon as possible at ieschultz1945@yahoo.com.

Holiday Sales at Church

At the Governing Board meeting in October, it was decided that church members may sell things at coffee hour during the month of December, with the following conditions:

  1. We ask for 10% of your profits, instead of a table charge. The same applies for Noel Night. We cannot accept material gifts as the church is in transition and not in position to store goods.
  2. Since Irene has agreed to make sure the building is locked up on those Sundays all sellers MUST BE PACKED UP AND OUT OF THE BUILDING BY 3pm - NO EXCEPTIONS. If you would like to secure
items you may do so in the room directly behind the Center for Women's Culture.
