Back by popular demand, we will be showing Bowling for Columbine, a movie by Michael Moore, which is focused on the gun culture. Should be interesting. The movie will be shown on Friday, May 25th at 7:00 P.M. in Memorial Hall. Donations always welcome. If anyone wants to go to dinner before the movie, see me, Sally Borden, and we’ll pick a place nearby.

Anyone interested in planning and serving an ethnic dinner at church? It can be a fun(d)raiser or not. Several people have asked about this. So, who feels ready to take on this challenge or has a better idea? Talk to Sally Borden (313-533-1494) or Nora Holt (248-356-4849) for more information.

Editor's Note: Food discounts available

The Women’s Alliance will be meeting on Wednesday, May 16th at noon. Our guest speaker will be Dorothy Kirby, a psychologist, who will speak to us about the problems and pleasures of the self. The cost for the luncheon is $6.00 and reservations must be made by Monday, May 14th before noon by calling the church office at 313-833-9107 or Eiko Takemoto at 313-869-6389.

First UU is now serving Fair Trade organic coffee during coffee hour. The UUA has a deal with Equal Exchange, which also provides Fair Trade tea, chocolate and other items. Check out the information regarding Equal Exchange near the Membership table during coffee hour. If interested, you may purchase items through the church and enjoy their Interfaith program discount. Check out more at www.equalexchange.com or see Dan Wiest for details.

First UU now enjoys discounts on purchases at area GFS stores of 10% as well as a sales tax exclusion. So if you are planning an event such as an ethnic dinner, contact the office for more information on buying supplies more cheaply.

At a recent coffee hour sale, we were able to contribute $100.00 to our church budget. Without the help of Rose LaBolle and Lance Halsted, I could not have done the sale. Thanks also to all the buyers and to Nicole Kuzub, the Robinsons and Jean Slazor for donations.

Also, I will be selling tickets during coffee hour, or you can call me about tickets to LAPSES at the Detroit Repertory Theater on Saturday, June 2 at 3:00 P.M. Thanks for participating in these fundraising events.

~ Margaret Beck

All are welcome to join the Muslim Dialog Club from Wayne State University and interested First UU explorers to dialog about faith and the world. We always have a compelling discussion. This month the dialog is on Sunday, May 20 at 2:00 PM.

In conjunction with Step it Up, six young people, five adults and one canine from First UU attended the walk on Belle Isle April 14 to keep the reduction of carbon on everyone’s agenda. Reduce Carbon 80% by 2050, read one of the signs. Every one of our signs were very well done. Marchers were about 50 in number and First UU made up about 20% of the crowd. There were two other marches in Detroit and 1400 nationwide. See Stepitup2007.org for pictures and information.

(Formerly known as UU Lake Geneva Summer Assembly)

Do you have vacation time and no plans? Are you interested in a week long UU experience, either for yourself, you and a loved one or something for the entire family? Have you ever heard of and wanted to go to the UU Summer Assembly in southern Wisconsin? This may be your chance. We are relocating and this year the assembly will be held at the Olympia resort in Oconomowoc, WI. You are invited to join us in our community during the first week in July as we embrace a period of change and growth. Please visit MUUSA.org for further details and printable registration form, but hurry, time and space are limited.

The Unitarian Universalist Men’s organization is pleased to send you a complimentary copy of our Quarterly -- MaleCall. Our UUMen’s Website, www.uumen.org includes past issues of our Newsletter, winning sermons from our Annual Men’s Sermon contest, and topical information such as how to start a men’s group, boy-friendly RE, and Coming of Age rituals. For any members attending this year’s GA in Portland, we would like to extend a warm welcome to them to visit our booth and to learn more about our organization.

Arise then…women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies, our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”
From the bosom of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace…Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God –
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality, may be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient and the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.
