Choir

Very nice singing, despite the reduced numbers. I know Lee’s piece and our interpretation of it moved the congregation, and the exit went FLAWLESSLY!  Thank you for helping move the service along.

We have next Sunday off, but be ready to sing at 9:30A.M. the first Sunday in June.  We'll be working out the trouble spots in Jabula Jesu and may be looking at a few responses for either June or next year.

Please make sure that any music you have (other than Jabula Jesu and The Lord Bless . . .) are turned in.  You can leave them in my mailbox outside Memorial Hall or have them at rehearsal in June.

Let's try and get everyone back for our last anthem this year and go out with a Bang!  LB

Development Committee

On May 16 & 17, $373.60 was made from the garage pre-sale.  Thank you to Mildred Robinson, Ruth Seifert and my friends Ellen Tallant and John O’Connor for helping.  Ozzie, my dog, also helped by guarding the items while I walked up to Mack Ave. to put up signs.

I still have a few tickets for the play Cheaters at the Detroit Repertory Theater at 3 P.M. on Saturday, June 7.  This is a fundraiser for the church.  Please let me know if you can help with garage sales this summer on Fridays and Saturdays.  Thank you.  Margaret Beck 313-882-7775

Membership Committee

How exciting it is to be a part of such a dynamic congregation!  New faces appear every Sunday, and how great it is to see so many new people assuming leadership roles in the church.

Two of our newer members, Wendy Culpepper and Arlene Cornier, created an outstanding inspirational Mother’s Day service on May 11.  If you didn’t attend church that day, you missed a real treat.

We have lots of opportunities for you to get acquainted with both the new and older folks who attend church here.  You can sign up to volunteer in coffee hour for the next three Sundays.

On a fun note, 11 of us attended the Michigan Opera Theater production of Die Fledermaus on May 16th where our own Celeste Headlee delighted the audience with her performance as Sally.  The theater parties organized by Margaret Beck and Faye Colling and the concerts, fundraisers and other social activities have provided opportunities to get to know each other while having a good time.  Arlene Teed

Women’s Alliance

Come on June 11 (please note Second Wednesday) to enjoy the fellowship of noon luncheon in Memorial Hall followed by “Music & Merriment” led by Nancy Hutchison and Friends” to give us a delightful send-off for the summer vacation time.  Please make reservations for luncheon by noon June 9.  You may phone Eiko Takemoto at 313-869-6389 or the church office at 313-833-9107.  The cost of the luncheon is $6.00. The next noon luncheon will be in September.  Watch for an announcement and  have a delightful summer.

Women’s Book Club

The June meeting of the Women’s Book Club will be on Sunday, June 1.  We will be discussing Margaret Atwood’s Edible Woman.  We will be meeting at Sinbad’s restaurant at 11:30 A.M.  The price of the brunch buffet is $14.95.  Carol Izant has a van and is willing to provide a ride to and from the church/restaurant for anyone who needs one.  Please call Maria Majer at 313-899-1694 to let her know if you will be there (so we will know how large a table to request) and to inform her if you will be needing a ride.

From Tom Cranston…Thank you very much for allowing the Heartland District Youth Steering Committee to use your church last weekend for their Annual Election/Bridging Conference.  It is especially appreciated in light of the lateness of our request to use it.

In addition, a special thanks to Sarah, Jenny and Jessica for their presence and helpfulness throughout the conference.  This made the job much easier for the staff.

Please accept the enclosed check for $200.00 as a donation from the Heartland UU District Youth Steering Committee as a token of our appreciation for helping us promote and further the development Youth Programming in our District.

For the Heartland District Youth Steering Committee and the Staff of the Election/Bridging Con, thanks for your support.

This and That

Although the Easter Breakfast was not a fund-raising event, it was a financial, as well as a dining success.  $170.50 in profit was donated to the church.  Our thanks to Earl Harvey, his son-in-law Scott, Carter Stevenson, Hillard Williams, Mark Bendure, Stuart Smith, John Strauther and Al Acker for making such a memorable feast.

Our Journey Toward Wholeness group is a coalition between our church, Birmingham Unitarian Church, and, recently, the Northwest UU Church.  The Journey Toward Wholeness UUA Initiative is the successor to the former UUA Black Concerns Working Group.  Our mission is to combat racism within and without our church communities.  At present, we are a surprisingly small group – about 20 from all three churches.  We welcome into membership all those who wish to join us in our quest.  We meet on the second Thursday of each month at alternating church sites.  Our next meeting is on Thursday, June 12, at First UU, 7 P.M.  We are making presentations at this year’s GA in Boston, on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28.

Welcome New Board Members

Congratulations to Linda Darga, Joe White, Carolyn Ludwig and Millie Jeffrey.

Going off the Board are Dan Weist, Margaret Beck, Al Acker and Jerry Wahl.  Colleen Dolan-Green is our new Moderator and Jim Harvey is our new Vice Moderator.  Lynda Smith is the Immediate Past Moderator.  Thank you all for a job well done!

Pampered Chef Fundraiser

A Pampered Chef Fundraiser will be held at the Emerson Church Unitarian Universalist on Wednesday, May 28th at 7:00 P.M. This demonstration party for kitchen tools and gadgets will be sure to inspire the gourmet cook in you.  The multipurpose kitchen tools, easy recipes that offer dramatic results, and simple mealtime preparation techniques will make home cooking quick, easy and fun.

Pampered Chef is the premier direct seller of essential kitchen tools.  To help in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer education and early detection programs, Pampered Chef will donate $1.00 to the American Cancer Society for each “Help Whip Cancer” product sold in the month of May.

Admission is free, but since refreshments will be served please call or email to let us know that you will be attending and how many guests you’ll bring.  Call 248-628-6497 or send an email to Nolan@qix.net with Pampered Chef in the subject line.  Emerson, known as “the barn church,” is located at 4230 Livernois Rd. just north of Wattles, in Troy.

First Friday

Please join us Friday, June 6th for a delicious, delectable dining extravaganza.  Peggy Wilkie and Irene Schultz will be getting` down in the kitchen for this event and after dinner, there will be a little something for everyone.  Reservations are an absolute must and need to be made no later than Wednesday, June 4th.  Remember that Irene is a real stickler for deadlines, well the same holds true for reservations.  Those with will eat first, those without will have to wait.  Reservations can be made by calling the church office at 313-833-9107 or Irene at 313-838-3348.
